SCOPE Certification in the US and Canada

As of October 2023, SCOPE Certification is no longer available to health professionals practicing in Canada or the United States of America.

Health professionals in these countries are still able to access all online SCOPE courses and attend SCOPE Schools and other SCOPE Accredited events, and certificates of completion will still be offered in recognition of CPD and CME.

This change has been implemented following extensive consultation with The Obesity Society (TOS), Obesity Canada, and the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM). It was determined that the term “certification” may cause confusion among health professionals and patients in the US and Canada, due to the specific meaning of the term in those geographies.

Physicians wishing to obtain board certification in obesity are encouraged to take the ABOM examination. Non-physicians who are not eligible for ABOM should contact TOS (if in the United States) or Obesity Canada (if in Canada) to discuss other certification opportunities.

Any health professionals practicing in the US or Canada who currently have SCOPE Certification will remain SCOPE Certified until the expiry of their current certification. After this date, it will not be possible for their certification to be renewed (unless practicing in another country). However, certificates of completion can be provided on request in recognition of ongoing CPD and CME. Health professionals in the US and Canada will not be required to complete the SCOPE Examination or to pay the annual renewal fee.

All health professionals engaging with SCOPE training remain highly valued by World Obesity for their commitment to addressing obesity in healthcare settings and their dedication to improving patient outcomes.
