Guide to SCOPE Certification
Do you want to join our global community of SCOPE Certified healthcare professionals? Read our step-by-step guide to find out how!
Step 1: Check your eligibility
SCOPE Certification is open to all healthcare professionals* with at least 6 months' practical experience related to obesity management within a medical or allied healthcare professional setting.
Unsure if you qualify? Email us at scope@worldobesity.org to check.
*Health professionals in the US and Canada are not eligible. Visit this page for more information.
Step 2: Create an account
If you don’t already have a SCOPE E-Learning account, complete the form on this page to sign up – it’s fast and free!
Step 3: Complete the Core Learning Path
Begin your SCOPE journey by completing the Core Learning Path, our 8-module course covering the ‘essentials’ of obesity management. The Core Learning Path cost is tiered based on country income, with discounts automatically applied at checkout. A further 25% discount is available to World Obesity members. Visit this page for more information on pricing.
Step 4: Earn a total of 12 SCOPE points
You will earn 4 SCOPE points by completing the Core Learning Path, so you will need to earn 8 more to reach the total of 12 required for SCOPE Certification. You can earn additional SCOPE points by taking supplementary modules (0.5 points each), completing our learning paths on CVD and childhood obesity (3 points each), attending SCOPE Schools (4 points each), and/or attending SCOPE Accredited courses (points vary).
Unsure how many points you’ve accrued? Check your total SCOPE points here.
Step 5: Complete the core exam
Once you have earned 12 SCOPE points, you will need to complete two exams: the core exam, and a supplementary exam of your choice.
The core exam comprises 70 multiple-choice questions, based on the Core Learning Path and several additional key modules. For a breakdown of the topics covered, visit this page.
You will have 2 hours, and a maximum of 3 attempts, to pass the core exam. To succeed, you must achieve a score of at least 70%.
Step 6: Complete a supplementary exam
You will also need to pass a supplementary exam on one of the following topics: obesity and primary care, obesity and medical conditions, obesity management and physical activity, or age, sex and cognitive issues. For a breakdown of the topics covered in each exam, visit this page.
Each supplementary exam has a time limit of 50 minutes and includes 30 questions. To pass, you must achieve a score of at least 70% within 3 attempts.
Step 7: Apply for SCOPE Certification
Once you have completed the Core Learning Path, earned a total of 12 SCOPE points, and passed both the core exam and one supplementary exam, you are ready to apply for certification!
Complete the form on this page to apply. You will need to provide evidence of your practical experience treating patients with obesity and the contact details of two referees who can verify your experience.
