Statement to the 75th World Health Assembly - Maternal, infant and young child nutrition
World Obesity, with support from NCD Alliance, thanks the Director General and WHO for this report on nutrition. We welcome the request to develop guidance for Member States on regulatory measures to restrict digital marketing of breastmilk substitutes and reporting planned for 2024 to monitor progress.
Nevertheless, while progress is being made to create healthy food environments, countries largely remain off track to meet the childhood obesity targets. Implementation of policies such as SSB taxes, restrictions on promotion and sponsorship of breastmilk substitutes, labelling and compliance with the International Code on Breastmilk substitutes remains unacceptably low.
We urge Member States to
- Take decisive action to address commercial determinants and put children’s and mothers’ health ahead of commercial interests.
- Request the WHO to develop monitoring tools to support this
We also support WCRF-International’s statement on the same agenda item.
