World Obesity Federation was represented by the All India Association for Advancing Research in Obesity (AIAARO) at the 76th Regional Committee of the WHO South-East Asia Region, which took place between 30 October and 2 November.

The meeting, attended by Dr Brij Makkar and Dr Mahendra Narwaria, secretary and president of AIAARO respectively, served to monitor progress in health-related interventions in the region, including universal coverage goals, health security, healthy schools and conditions ranging from tropical disease to CVD.

Speaking under the agenda item on 'Monitoring progress on UHC and health-related SDGs', World Obesity's India representatives stressed the importance of obesity prevention and treatment as an indispensable step towards meeting sustainable development goals.

In a region with alarming rates of obesity and associated risk factors, delegates pointed out the struggles faced by individuals in accessing adequate obesity care.

World Obesity pointed out that, despite WHO recognition on the need for equitable access to treatment and management of obesity, much more action in both the policy and treatment arenas was necessary to start having a meaningful impact on obesity incidence in the region, which is home to a quarter of the world's population.
