For World Obesity Day 2025, the Obesity Prevention and Control Section of the Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS-OPCS), the Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU) Global Health Institute (GHI), and the International Research Center for Obesity and Metabolic Diseases, in collaboration with nearly 100 organisations worldwide, hosted the 2025 'World Obesity Day: China in Action' series of events.


The work aimed to strengthen obesity prevention and control efforts, enhance public health, and advance the Healthy China initiative, aligning with the 2025 WOD theme: Changing Systems, Healthier Lives.


China Obesity Prevention and Control Training

A key event was the 2025 World Obesity Day: China Obesity Prevention and Control Training held on 2 March, broadcast live on People’s Daily Health Channel (a leading official media in China) and other platforms. It attracted 710,000 online participants, highlighting the growing societal attention on obesity.

The event aimed to raise awareness, share evidence-based strategies, and build a sustainable prevention framework. Experts from China and abroad discussed the latest obesity research, clinical practices, and management strategies within the Healthy China Framework.

The event was chaired by Professor Wang Youfa, President of CNS-OPCS, Vice President of XJTU Health Science Center, and Dean of GHI. Professor He Gengsheng, Vice President of CNS-OPCS and Vice Dean of Fudan University School of Public Health, moderated the Q&A. The event opened with 2025 "World Obesity Day: China in Action" video, featuring global and domestic leaders, including Presidents of the World Obesity Federation (WOF), CNS, and the Chinese Preventive Medicine Association (CPMA), and 12 academic society directors, collectively advocating for Changing Systems, Healthier Lives. Professor Wang outlined WOD’s mission and highlighted China’s 10 types of actions, including a High-Level Forum, release of the Chinese version of the 2025 World Obesity Atlas, and 2024’s Top 10 Chinese Obesity Research Achievements. He also reviewed progress since the 2022 launch of "World Obesity Day: China in Action" campaign.

Keynote speakers, including Prof. Simón Barquera (President of the World Obesity Federation (WOF)), Chen Jiapeng (Deputy Director of the China Population and Development Research Center and Secretary-General of the Healthy China Research Center), Yang Yuexin (President of the CNS), and Liang Xiaofeng (CPMA Vice President), praised the work of the CNS-OPCS and the GHI’s impactful forums since 2022.

China Summit

The 2025 World Obesity Day: China Summit was held virtually on 4 March, garnering participation from over 750,000 viewers through live broadcasts on People’s Daily Health Channel and partnering platforms. As China’s foremost academic forum on obesity prevention and control since its inception in 2022, this fourth annual event convened prominent domestic and international experts to tackle pressing obesity issues, prevention strategies, and implementation frameworks. 

Organized by the Obesity Prevention and Control Section of the Chinese Nutrition Society (CNS-OPCS), Global Health Institute (GHI) of Xi’an Jiaotong University (XJTU), and the International Research Center for Obesity and Metabolic Diseases, the summit strengthened partnerships with the World Health Organization (WHO), World Obesity Federation (WOF), China’s National Health Commission, and Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and leading national academic societies.
