SCOPE School Abu Dhabi and UAE Obesity Conference
In November, World Obesity staff and supporters had the pleasure of joining esteemed colleagues in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates for the 6th UAE Obesity Conference, the inaugural 'World Obesity Federation - Middle East and North Africa' Conference, and a SCOPE School.
The CME and SCOPE-accredited UAE Obesity Conference with the theme 'Obesity is a Multi-Organ Disease’ was the biggest yet and featured talks, sessions and debates led by global and regional experts, including World Obesity CEO Johanna Ralston, Past President, Professor Donna Ryan, and Head of Data and Evidence, Jaynaide Powis.
H.E. Dr. Ahmed Abdulhadi AlKhazraji, Acting Director-General of World Obesity member organisation, the Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre, led the opening ceremony with a inspiring talk of how Abu Dhabi is working to address obesity.
6th UAE Obesity Conference
The 2-day conference, co-chaired by World Obesity colleagues, Dr Sara Suliman of the Imperial College London Diabetes Centre, and Dr Mohammed Al Hadad from Healthpoint, then proceeded to headline world-renowned obesity experts, including Professor Volkan Yumuk from the European Association for the Study of Obesity, Professor Carel Le Roux and Professor Arya Sharma.
Topics included the latest science and evidence on obesity treatment and management, new local and regional guidelines, updates on best-practice obesity diagnosis and advice on how to train as an obesity specialist. With over 500 delegates present at the conference, it was clear that the desire for obesity knowledge in the region is great and we look forward to attending future conferences.
SCOPE School
Following the 6th UOC Congress and the 1st World Obesity MENA Congress, we organised a SCOPE School on 18th October in Abu Dhabi chaired by Sara Suliman, attracting over 100 delegates, including international attendees.
The programme covered essential topics such as obesity lifestyle interventions, pharmacotherapy, patient perspectives, case studies, stigma, and community barriers. The event concluded with actionable insights and a renewed commitment to advancing multidisciplinary obesity care in the region.
