Professor Nishan Sudheera Kalupahana awarded SCOPE National Fellowship
Congratulations to Professor Nishan Sudheera Kalupahana, who has been awarded a National Fellowship by SCOPE (the Strategic Centre for Obesity Professional Education), becoming the first in Sri Lanka to receive this honour.
Prof. Kalupahana is a professor in human nutrition and consultant nutritionist attached to the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. He is also an adjunct professor and graduate faculty at the Department of Nutritional Sciences at Texas Tech University in the USA. After obtaining his MBBS and MPhil degrees from the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka and a Ph.D. in Human Nutrition from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA, Nishan completed his postdoctoral training at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at Memphis, Tennessee, USA.
Since then, he has worked proactively as a founder of specialist clinical nutrition programs, and engages with professional societies, whilst actively contributing to guideline committees, including for the management of patients with Obesity in Sri Lanka. He serves as a regular member of the American Society for Nutrition and is a current council member of the Sri Lanka Medical Nutrition Association and the College of Endocrinologists of Sri Lanka. He has also served as a reviewer for the Medical Research Council (UK).
Prof. Kalupahana’ s research areas include metabolic disorders in Asian populations, omega-3 fatty acids, dietary bioactive food compounds, adipose tissue biology and the renin angiotensin system. In recognition of his achievements, Prof Kalupahana has been awarded a SCOPE National Fellowship by the World Obesity Federation. SCOPE Fellowship is the most prestigious award offered by SCOPE and recognises world-class expertise in the field of obesity management.
