Obesity evidence in action in Brazilian Congress this World Obesity Day
To mark World Obesity Day, the Brazilian Obesity Panel (PBO), chaired by Instituto Cordial, was instrumental in delivering an impactful session in Brazil's National Congress on the obesity burden in the country.
The session was attended by Instituto Cordial's Director of Operations, Mr Luis Fernando Meyer, as well as president of ABESO, Dr Bruno Halpern, and more. The intervention focused on data published in the Obesity Atlas, following a translation project undertaken by colleagues at the Instituto, drawing the attention of parliamentarians and civil society to the gravity of the obesity situation in Brazil.
Among the data highlighted was the projected increase in cases of obesity in Brazil and worldwide, with one-third of the population expected to be living with obesity by 2030.
As part of its advocacy work in the Brazilian legislature, PBO has suggested 42 obesity-related bills to be considered by congress representatives. They also support the creation of a specific congressional subcommittee on obesity, as proposed in 2023 by Deputy Dr Benjamin. Furthermore, the PBO has provided technical assistance for deputies to formulate bills for obesity prevention and care based on the latest and best on the subject.
During the session, Mr Meyer suggested to the deputies present that a public hearing be held on obesity in Brazil: "If we act in a coordinated manner, Brazil can be an example in facing this challenge". Read more about this here.
