New members join World Obesity
As we prepare to close out 2024, we are pleased to welcome two new organisations as World Obesity members.
Joining us are the Health Care Association of Nepal (HCAN), and Algerian Society for the Fight Against Obesity and Metabolic Diseases (SAOMM). Both organisations join us as Associate Members.
Health Care Association of Nepal (HCAN)
Health Care Association of Nepal (HCAN) was founded with the vision of establishing a healthcare system in Nepal that is not only sustainable but also ensures equity for all. Our team is composed of dedicated medical and public health professionals driven by a shared passion to effect positive change in healthcare delivery, medical education development, and public health initiatives throughout Nepal. These areas include the development of medical education, the promotion of health equity, empowerment of women, support for child education, environmental sanitation, fostering youth leadership, poverty eradication, and the pursuit of sustainable energy development.
Vision: To reduce the burden of NCDs with medical and public health youth empowerment and involvement.
Mission: Improve healthcare services and infrastructure in rural Nepal while empowering medical and public health students.
Currently, our focus is on the sustainable and integrated management of chronic conditions such as hypertension, COPD, and diabetes. These conditions impose a substantial burden on the health of the population, and we believe that addressing them comprehensively is essential for the well-being and development of Nepal.
"We are committed to fostering a healthier society through youth-led initiatives focused on NCD prevention and obesity awareness”
- HCAN Director, Prajwal Bhandarl

Algerian Society for the Fight Against Obesity and Metabolic Diseases (SAOMM)
SAOMM organise scientific meetings, provide training for healthcare professionals, promote the exchange of expertise, develop health education, and disseminate guidelines and informational materials to improve the prevention and management of obesity and metabolic diseases.
“In addition to being a disease in itself, obesity is also a major risk factor for other more serious pathologies, and which, due to its complexity and chronicity, is a basis for many chronic diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer and NASH, to name just a few”
- SAOMM President, Amar Tebaibia
