Let’s talk about obesity and … Costa Rica
Asociación Lucha Contra la Obesidad (ALCO), our member organisation in Costa Rica, organised a landmark event this WOD that convened key players in the country.
These key stakeholders included the health ministry, medical associations, civil society, the private sector and others. The event led to agreements on recognition of obesity as a disease and promotion of obesity policy to achieve better education and awareness.
'Let's talk about obesity', organised in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose, saw participation from PAHO, the Ministry of Health, as well as numerous organisations in the Central American country.
Opening remarks were given by Dr Simón Barquera, World Obesity President-Elect, as well as event organiser, Jose Arturo Vega Boza.
Other participants included medical associations, nurses, social workers, psychologists, the Costa Rican Institute for Research and Teaching in Nutrition and Health, private organisations such as Weight to Go, Costa Rican Association of Surgery for Obesity Management, ICOMED, ASCED and other civil associations such as Día Vida, Costa Rica Saludable, among others.
An agreement was reached to work together, join forces and fight for obesity to be recognised nationally as a chronic non-communicable disease, seek support from decision makers and create public policy that can fund information, education and care programmes on obesity issues.
Mr Vega Boza, who leads ALCO, vowed to begin work on the initiatives that were proposed during the meeting.
