2022 in review: The Argentine Society of Obesity and Eating Disorders (SAOTA)
The Argentine Society of Obesity and Eating Disorders (SAOTA, by its Spanish acronym) joined World Obesity Federation as a Full Member in 2022 and is pleased to share a round-up of its most significant activities.
Held on 4 and 5 August 2022, SAOTA celebrated the International Workshop on Obesity and Food Transition in the headquarters of the Argentinian Medical Association in Buenos Aires. The event was held in person, with a remote access option.
Throughout the year, SAOTA held a series of scientific meetings free to all participants. The first such meeting was held on the theme of 'Unusual severe obesity and treatment with metreleptin', delivered by Dr Hernán Yupanqui Lozno, an endocrinologist, lecturer, clinical researcher and Director of the Colombian Obesity Foundation.
The second scientific meeting was held in June, and addressed the topic of 'Eat less and move more: causes or consequences of obesity?'. Presenting the topic was Dr Martin Milmaniene, Unit Head at the Pivorano Hospital, Buenos Aires.
In October, SAOTA teamed up with the Argentinian Society of Nutritional Doctors (SAMENUT) to deliver its third scientific meeting, on the subject of 'Twincretins: the new era in obesity medication'. This seminar was delivered by Dr Raúl Bastarrachea (Mexico), Joint Professor at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute and Senior Researcher at the Sansun Diabetes Institute, California.
Finally, SAOTA was instrumental in a distance learning postgraduate programme on obesity, held with the Argentinian Medical Association in a hybrid format, with class activities and discussion forums over three months from May to August 2022. Members of SAOTA were delighted to be present in the diploma ceremony for students.
